Rails Fare Much Better Than Roads In Year-End Transit Comparison
Debt Management A lot happened this year in the world of transportation. But it seemed to be a better year for trains than for cars. The Secaucus Junction station opened, for one, shortening the train ride into New York by connecting New York-bound trains to NJ Transit's other rail lines that spread out across New Jersey. Weekend service began in September, and weekday service started this month.
Debt Relief Solution NJ Transit officials say the new service is knocking 15 to 20 minutes off the travel time into New York, since riders no longer have to go to Hoboken and take a ferry or PATH train into the city.
Debt Management Services It's also easier to take the train to lower Manhattan thanks to the restoration of PATH service to the World Trade Center site in late November. That saves time because commuters no longer have to take the train into midtown Manhattan and ride the subway south.
Bad Credit Debt Consolidation Meanwhile, road projects in Morris County hold the hope of reducing congestion in years ahead. But one of them -- the expansion of the Route 24 exit ramp on Route 287 from one to two lanes -- caused a few months of traffic headaches when one lane of Route 287 was closed in each direction for construction.
Credit Debt Solution Another road project to alleviate traffic jams at the Route 10/Route 202 interchange is still conceptual. The plans were finalized this month in a meeting between the state Department of Transportation and officials from Parsippany, Morris Plains and Hanover.
Consolidation Counseling But the $15 million plan is at least four years from implementation because of the stiff competition for road project funding.
Credit Card Debt Money for road and transit projects is tighter than ever because of mismanagement of the state's Transportation Trust Fund, which pays for road, bridge and transit improvements. As of 2000, the fund carried $4.5 billion in debt, nearly six times what it collects in taxes each year.
Debt Free Solution Loan payments now account for more than 90 percent of the fund's expenditures, and its debt is spread over 20 years.
Debt Negotiation Services The problem is so severe that a blue-ribbon commission of transportation experts recommended a hike in the gas tax up to 15 cents a gallon, more than double the current tax rate.
Debt Solution Company That solution was nixed by Gov. James E. McGreevey, however, who said it could harm the state's economy.
Debt Elimination Services Meanwhile, traffic concerns are growing ever more virulent. Many of the complaints about New Jersey's roads can be seen on the Web site launched this year by the transportation coalition Keep New Jersey Moving. The group even compiled a list of New Jersey's worst roads, in an effort to catch the attention of lawmakers.
Debt Reduction Something's got to give. The pent-up need for transportation dollars is going to force a solution, hopefully before the issue is pushed to the forefront by a high-profile bridge collapse or other disaster.
Debt Solution Inc Next year, at this time, we hope to be writing about the solutions.
